Adventures of the Birthday Girl in D.C.

By: Ann

Hi all. I decided to get a quick post in before our trip to Cleveland for Christmas.  As some/most of you know, our little burst of undying energy turned 2 last month.  We wanted to take her some place where she could run around and have a good time; unfortunately, all the places we looked were closed for private birthday parties or it was raining, so it wouldn’t have been too enjoyable (for at least Jason and I).

We found a place called Habitot Children’s Museum in Berkeley.  It was a bit of a drive, but we figured it’s definitely a special occasion.  She loved this place.  This place has a model spaceship equipped with costumes, phones, and all sorts of buttons that she is usually told not to touch. The museum also had a toy train set, grocery store filled with mini-size grocery carts and fake food galore, wind tunnel, reading room, water play area, and art room to paint and make cool clay masterpieces.  She was in paradise.  Although, she did spend a lot of time in the gift store just playing with toys, too.  This is where I couldn’t resist and bought her two stamp sets, one including planes, trains, and other things that go.  The other one included barn animals.  These stamps have revived potty training in our household and daycare.  I know it has been a good potty day when her legs, arms, and belly are filled with potty stamps.

Later that Wednesday, we flew to D.C in order to spend Thanksgiving with my parents.  It was really nice having my mom and Bob take care of Athena while we slept in until 9:00-10:00 every day.  I can’t remember the last time I slept in that late.  It was definitely pre-Athena, though.

DSC_0092.JPG DSC_0087.JPG

On Thursday, we had my mom’s delicious Thanksgiving meal that included veggie lasagna, rice and peas, chicken, green bean casserole, and purple sweet potatoes.  I’m probably forgetting some yummy food.  I blame it on the food coma that I suffered.  We all suffered from food comas that day.

We had to keep a close eye on Athena, because she knew how to escape from the condo.  She would even close the den door (where Papa was) in order to make a quick an unnoticed escape several times.  She’s a sneaky one.

DSC_0193.JPG

The next day, Papa and Nana took Athena to a children’s play place a few towns over while Jason and I relaxed at home.  I took a bubble bath.  That hasn’t happened in years.

On Saturday, we headed to Tyson’s Mall in order to play in the play area on the third floor and ride the train that we had been hearing so much about.  It was great.  Athena was, again, in paradise.  She had this goofy grin on her face the whole time.  She kept on trying to escape from us several times in order to hop back on the train.  Super cute.

DSC_0152.JPGDSC_0110.JPG

DSC_0143.JPG

Athena had her own personal laptop on loan while we were at my parents house.  My mom gave her free reign of all the “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” cartoons on YouTube.  It somehow mutated into some sort of eastern European Christmas cartoon marathon.  I’m not sure what happened.

DSC_0157.JPG DSC_0096.JPG

It was great seeing my parents again.  Being that we have little help here in California, it’s always nice being spoiled a bit with some free daycare,  good food, and lots of love.  As you can see below, it’s getting tougher and tougher to get portraits with this wiggle worm.  Just in case you were wondering, the third picture below, Athena wants you to know she is wearing shoes.

DSC_0168.JPG DSC_0171.JPG DSC_0175.JPG DSC_0185.JPG

Here’s some cute pictures if you haven’t overloaded on cuteness, yet.

**And, yet, when it’s totally appropriate to wear a hat, she doesn’t want it.

Whirlwind Trips

By: Ann

Once again, we are about 2 months late with this post.  Most of you have seen pictures from our trip to Boston, DC, and Dayton, but if you didn’t and  are wondering how the trips went, here’s a post for you.  Warning:  There are lots of pictures at the end.  Sorry if it takes a while to load.  I also apologize for the formatting of the pictures.  We’re still getting used to this new picasa plug-in.

In late September, Jason headed off to St. Louis in order to give a talk at the National Association for Government Webmasters Conference or NAGW (and, yes, they do pronounce it “Nag-Wa”). He had been preparing for this conference for months.  Jason had great reviews on his talk about  fighting site abuse with webmaster tools. I was happy that he was able to give this important talk that he had been preparing for months, but I was pretty bummed due to the fact that he would be gone for our fifth anniversary.  We don’t usually do anything too huge for our anniversary, but I was still down.  Fortunately he did manage to take me to go see Scott Pilgrim in the middle of the day a few days before he had to leave.  It was so good that we saw it a second time that weekend.

Back to the whirlwind trip, when Jason was finished in St. Louis, the plan was for him to fly to Boston and meet us there.  I had an otolaryngology conference (American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Foundation Annual Meeting) to attend.  We figured we’d hit two birds with one stone and visit Jason’s brother and fiancee Laura while we were out there.  I was pretty terrified to fly alone with Athena.  She usually does really well on flights, but that’s with the two of us keeping her occupied.  I don’t know why I was so worried.  She did fine as always.  It was a pretty exhausting flight, though.  Entertaining a 22-month old for 5.5 hours in an enclosed space is pretty tiring.  She kept on wanting to climb in the lap of the guy that was sitting by me.  He ended up moving when we went to the bathroom.  I think he waited until we were gone in order to not hurt my feelings.  I told him he could move at any time, though.

Saturday night Athena and I arrived at Boston airport to be greeted by Jason since he decided to fly in an hour before me.  I kept on telling Athena that when the plane stopped, we were going to see Daddy.  When the plane came to a stop (by the hanger), she proceeded to yell out the window, “Da-Da! Da-Da!”  I thought that was pretty cute.

I can’t really give you a detailed account of what happened in Boston since I was at the conference from Sunday-Wednesday, but I can provide pictures of the good times had by Jason, Laura, Ryan, and Athena.

Right after the conference on Wednesday, we took the Acella Express (train) from Boston to DC.  Let me just tell you this.  If we had the option of taking a train instead of flying anywhere, we definitely would.  This train ride was so nice and smooth.  No baggage check, no security lines, deluxe seats with more than enough leg room, freedom to walk the aisle of the train whenever you please?  What more can a person want?  With the time that it takes for us to drive to the airport, drop off our car, check our bags, obtain an infant pass for Athena, walk through security, and then finally take our flight and obtain our bags again, it almost takes the same amount of time traveling by train (from Boston to DC).

Back to our travel saga…

We arrived in DC at night to be greeted by my step-dad Bob.  We told my mom to stay home because we just had too many things to fit into the car.  Traveling for one week with a small child now is like packing for 1 month.  We decided to go to DC in order to drop Athena off with my parents while we flew to Tracy and Michele’s wedding in Dayton, OH.  I know.  Craziness.

My mom and Bob treated us to a post-anniversary dinner date at Maggiano’s while they watched Athena the next day.  It was great.  I even had wine and dessert with my relaxing dinner like an actual person instead of shoveling as much food in my mouth before anyone starts to throw a tantrum.

DSC_1150.JPG

Athena did great while she was with my parents.  They definitely received the whole Athena effect with the constant activity, struggling to feed her,  and a certain incident involving 2 tubs, one bath session, and lots of poop.

DSC_1130.JPG

DSC_1144.JPG

The next day, Jason and I flew to Dayton for Tracy and Michele’s wedding.  We went to college with Tracy and we have adopted Michele as our friend due to her true awesomeness.  It was kind of a mini OWU college reunion…missing a few key players.  You know who you are.  It was great seeing everyone after so long.  It made us start seriously considering going to our ten year reunion next year.

Here are some pictures from the party the night before and the wedding.  We were pleasantly surprised with finding out that our college chaplain Jon Powers was going to do the ceremony.  He married Jason and I, too!

You absolutely can’t have a wedding without karaoke in this group of friends…

DSC_1380.JPG DSC_1311.JPGDSC_1423.JPG

The next day, Jason and I proceeded to fly to DC, pick up Athena, and then fly back to San Francisco (to return back to work the next day).  It was a crazy, long day.  She did well on the flight again.  We didn’t fully recover from all of the traveling until about two weeks later.  It was a great trip, but it was pretty ambitious of us getting all of this done within one week.

We will be going to DC for Thanksgiving and Cleveland for Christmas.  Athena will have her own seat for these flights since she will be two by then.  Those will be our next big adventures.  We’re juggling the idea of taking a red eye flight with Athena to cut down on cost in December.  Has anyone taken a red eye flight with a young child before?  Any advice?

Congrats and Miscellaneous

By: Ann

I forgot to mention that some congratulations are in order for Jason’s brother Ryan and his girlfriend Laura who just got engaged a few weekends ago.  We’re all super excited about the up and coming wedding sometime next year.  Athena will be making her little debut as a flower girl.  She’ll be almost 3 by then.  We shall see what kind of wild card she will draw at the wedding.

Here are some miscellaneous pictures off of my camera from Chicago as promised in the last post. Here’s Cory and Athena enjoying some pool action.

All three zonked out after the Navy Pier.

Surprise Visit to Chicago

By: Ann

About two weeks ago on Wednesday, Jason, Athena, and I flew to Chicago to surprise my brother, and later step-dad and mom who were driving through.  We haven’t seen the Chicago gang since Christmas, so the trip was long overdue.  Ever since I found out my parents were traveling through, I knew I really wanted to plan the surprise.  Dominique kept the secret ever since May.  It was great.  My brother was super surprised.  Unfortunately, he had a DJ event that evening, so he couldn’t hang out too much the first night.

The first day that we were there, we kind of took it easy.  Jadyn, Caleb, and Cory had swim classes in the morning.  I dressed Athena up in her little swimsuit so she could enjoy the water, which she definitely did.  She nearly gave me a heart attack by running straight into the water with her shoes and clothes on.  This kid has no fear.  Luckily, she ran into the wading section; however, the water level rises pretty quickly.  I have to get her into swimming lessons.  I have to get myself into swimming lessons, while I’m at it.

In the process of getting my little fish out of the water with all of her clothes on, I dropped my iPhone in the water, total immersion.  The next 24 hours my iPhone spent some time in a bag of dried rice, while I prayed that my phone would work once again.  My brother took my phone to a friend of his who fixes iPhones, and it was as good as new in a couple of days.

As soon as I find my camera, I will post pictures from the pool.  the rest of the day we took it easy, again.  Athena was still recovering from the long flights.  We did have a mini campfire in the backyard later that night and cooked smores for the kids and pina coladas for the adults.  I’ll have to steal those pictures from Pauel somehow.

[simage=1761,max,n,center,][simage=1745,max,n,center,]

After (or maybe before) the smores, Athena and Cory decided to put on a concert for us.  It was very cute.  I was waiting for someone to open up the piano, because I knew as soon as Athena saw the piano keys, she would go wild (which she did).

[simage=1751,max,n,center,][simage=1752,max,n,center,][simage=1756,max,n,center,]

The next day (after swim practice) we decided to go to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.  This was the day my parents were supposed to arrive, but we were thinking they wouldn’t arrive until 5pm or so; however, we didn’t take into mind the time change and the chance of, literally, no rush hour traffic on a Friday.  More on this later.

The zoo was great.  I know I’ve seen giraffes before at other zoos, but these giraffes looked so…clean and well-groomed.  They also had camels at the zoo, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen in real life before.

[simage=1723,max,n,center,][simage=1734,max,n,center,][simage=1718,max,n,center,][simage=1725,max,n,center,][simage=1708,max,n,center,][simage=1733,max,n,center,][simage=1719,max,n,center,][simage=1701,max,n,center,][simage=1698,max,n,center,][simage=1706,max,n,center,][simage=1695,max,n,center,]

So after the zoo, Dominique tells me that she should check on my brother and see if he had left work, yet, or if he had even heard from my parents.  It’s 3:30 at this point.  Pauel calls back frantic, “They’re in Lansing! They’re in Lansing!”  Lansing is the town they live in.  I thought he was joking at first, because he kind of was using his joking voice, but the way I heard him rustling around in the background with keys and whatnot, made me think otherwise.  I was cracking up at this point.  This was the worst case scenario that my parents arrived at the house and no one was home. No kids. No grandkids.  Nada.  I haven’t heard my brother sound so scared since we were little kids and he had broken something valuable.  Oh how we revert to our childhood ways when we’re all together.  I love it.

Fortunately, everyone was in good spirits when my brother arrived home.  My mom took the opportunity to work on a few things from work while the children were out.  An hour later, when we all arrived back from the zoo, we were able to shock my mom and step-dad with our presence.  It was great to see  the look on her face.

We later had a yummy homemade fajita dinner and then my parents treated everyone to ice cream treats located conveniently just down the street.  After the ice cream, Cory and Athena gave an encore performance, while Uncle Jason presumed his duties as the play slave.

[simage=1620,max,n,center,][simage=1622,max,n,center,][simage=1618,max,n,center,][simage=1631,max,n,center,][simage=1625,max,n,center,][simage=1624,max,n,center,]

Right before bed, we decided to have a little Dance Party USA and have the kids show off their moves.  Caleb and Cory love to break dance.

[simage=1632,max,n,center,][simage=1641,max,n,center,][simage=1634,max,n,center,][simage=1635,max,n,center,]

The next morning, before heading out to Navy Pier, the kids decided to put on a fashion show with their back-to-school clothing that Nonny and Papa gave them.  Jadyn was the announcer over the baby monitor.  Uber cute.

[simage=1644,max,n,center,][simage=1643,max,n,center,][simage=1647,max,n,center,]

Later that day we drove to Chicago’s Navy Pier.  We stopped at Bubba Gump’s for lunch and afterwards rode on the ferris wheel and carousel.  It is a very touristy area, but it was fun walking around seeing all of the sites.

[simage=1657,max,n,center,][simage=1662,max,n,center,][simage=1663,max,n,center,][simage=1676,max,n,center,][simage=1672,max,n,center,][simage=1689,max,n,center,]

When we got back home, it was more time for relaxation.  It was Caleb’s turn to be the play slave for Athena, apparently.

[simage=1690,max,n,center,] Athena kind of stuck to Cory like glue all weekend.  Jadyn, Caleb, and Cory were all really good about letting us know if Athena was into something she wasn’t supposed to be in.  I think Cory loved the fact that he wasn’t the baby anymore.

[simage=1693,max,n,center,]

The next morning, my parents left, but not without some quick family portraits.

Catch up post about what we’re up to

By: Ann

Another sorry for the extreme delay in the updates in the post.  Jason’s surgery went well.  He had no complications and he is back to eating his regular (rabbit) diet.  Jason was never an unhealthy eater, he just inherited the bad genes where his cholesterol and gallbladder are concerned.

A few weeks later we went to a wedding reception of one of Jason’s coworkers, Koklynn.  She and her husband had the big ceremony in China and smaller wedding and reception in California.  We were a bit nervous because we were going to travel 2.5 hours to Sacramento and be out pretty late.  We’ve never been out late with Athena before.  She was great.  She partied and danced all night long until 10:30 and fell asleep in the car at 11:00, just in time for the drive home.  Everyone was very impressed at how well behaved she was.

[simage=2041,max,n,center,][simage=2047,max,n,center,][simage=2032,max,n,center,]

A few weeks later on Independence Day weekend, we traveled up to Medford, Oregon to see the Oregon Newmans.  It was great seeing my brother, sister-in-law, and baby niece Alia.  Athena’s new favorite word that weekend was “baby” followed by “Alia” (pronounced by Athena Ahhh-leyah).

[simage=1987,max,n,center,][simage=1994,max,n,center,]

The picture below is from the  city park in Jacksonville, Oregon.  Athena kept on refusing to admit how cold she was.

[simage=2020,max,n,center,][simage=1951,max,n,center,]

This is probably the only thirty seconds in which she didn’t cry when I held her.  That’s okay.  I didn’t take it personally.

[simage=1893,max,n,center,][simage=1884,max,n,center,]

On Independence Day, we drove down to Howard Prairie Lake for some lakeside fun.  The babies loved it.  Athena, again, refused to leave the lake even though her lips were starting to pale a bit.

[simage=1940,max,n,center,][simage=1908,max,n,center,]

We were so impressed with the fountains in Jacksonville (OR) that we decided to find some in our area.  Low and behold, there were some fountains right in downtown Los Gatos near my clinic.  The fountains were a little much for Athena, but I think she had just as much fun.

[simage=1971,max,n,center,][simage=1981,max,n,center,][simage=1965,max,n,center,][simage=1977,max,n,center,]

Tired baby after the fountains…

[simage=1986,max,n,center,]

The next weekend, Julie and Alia drove in for a wedding.  Athena was thrilled to see her baby cousin again.  She was as gentle as she could be.  Alia isn’t quite crawling, yet, but she was definitely scooting as fast as she could to keep up with her cousin.

[simage=1855,max,n,center,][simage=1862,max,n,center,][simage=1853,max,n,center,]

The next weekend our friends from Cleveland (Ryan, his wife Jessi, their son Asher, and JJ) came to stay a week with us.  Ryan and JJ went to high school together…and I’m pretty sure Ryan and Jason went to  grade school together, too.  JJ and Jason know each other from preschool.  It was great having them for so long.  Time went by so quick.  The first day that they were here, we kind of relaxed and took it easy.  It’s pretty rough traveling with a baby.  Here’s Asher and Athena playing with some fake food that was given to us by JJ and the Glows.  Later that night I fed the gang with Chicken parmesan.  Since I am a vegetarian, I think little faith was put in my cooking abilities.  I’m pretty sure I surprised everyone with a tasty dinner.  I haven’t been vegetarian all of my life, people.

[simage=1833,max,n,center,]

The next day we went to the Gilroy Garlic Festival.  This festival is supposedly nationally known.  If you’re a garlic lover, this is your paradise.  You can even find weird oddities like garlic ice cream.  It was pretty crowded and hot by the time we ended up giving up on finding the garlic ice cream.

[simage=1839,max,n,center,]

We found out that Athena loves live children’s entertainment.  This is her climbing up on stage to join the other children dancing.

[simage=1845,max,n,center,]

Later that night I fed the gang with homemade pizzas.

The next day, while I was at work, They all headed down to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.  The kids absolutely loved the place.  I wish I could have been there to witness it.  That last time we were there, Athena had a great time, but she was not walking, yet, so we couldn’t go on any of the rides.

[simage=1818,max,n,center,][simage=1816,max,n,center,][simage=1825,max,n,center,][simage=1803,max,n,center,]

Athena has oh so much love to give.

[simage=1799,max,n,center,]

The next day, also while I was at work, Jason treated everyone to some Google lunch.  Who knew that a Google tour would not be as enjoyable running after 2 babies?  After Google, the gang headed down to the Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose.

Look at my girl climbing where she’s not supposed to go.  Surprise, surprise…

[simage=1769,max,n,center,]

[simage=1774,max,n,center,][simage=1793,max,n,center,]

Later that day when I got home from work, we all decided to hang out on Castro Street for some good Mexican food and gelato.

[simage=1796,max,n,center,][simage=1798,max,n,center,]

On Wednesday we toured some wineries in Sonoma.  JJ was our designated driver.  We were able to stop at 6-7 wineries which were all okay, but Jessi and I have a distinct taste for dessert wines, which are better found in colder areas, like coastal California.  I guess we know this for next time.  It’s been a while since I have hung out like this sans baby.  Jason was at work (that day and Thursday), Athena was in daycare that day (which she made us pay for later that night) and Asher stayed home and relaxed with his daddy while the girls played.   It was great.

We had cameras.  We were just a little too tipsy to remember taking pictures.  But we did remember to check in on Foursquare at each location (with JJ’s help).

On Thursday, we went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  Fishies galore.  It was a big hit with the babies.

[simage=2115,max,n,center,][simage=2129,max,n,center,][simage=2127,max,n,center,][simage=2116,max,n,center,]

Thursday night we took it easy since it was the last night for the Glows.  Asher and Athena ended up taking a bath together, but I had to take Athena out.  She was super excited to have a friend to share her bath with.  She’s usually pretty wild for her baths, but she was particularly wild this time, which was a little much for Asher.  But they made up soon afterward.  Please let it be known that if Rachel B. is unavailable to be Asher’s prom date, Athena has first dibs.

2 Little Monkeys

On Friday, the Glows left, I returned to work, and JJ enjoyed her six hour San Francisco tour without having to push any strollers or be in charge of holding Jason’s fancy camera while someone ran after children.  I’m glad she got some adult time.  I was starting to feel a little bad.

The next post will be all about our long weekend in Chicago and how I surprised my brother and mom for a visit.  This plan has been in the works ever since May, so I was glad that no information was leaked to important sources.  We are still uploading many pictures from the visit, so please be patient with us.

Traveling to Dublin – Trinity College, Howth, the Grand Canal

Ann has been writing about recent adventures with Athena but I’ll pick up from where I left off, visiting Dublin. One of the most popular attractions in Dublin is the Book of Kells, a 1200-year old illuminated manuscript of the four Gospels. I’m a bit of a history geek but I had heard that going to see the book was a bit disappointing for some people – standing in line for a long time and paying 9 euro to see two pages of one book isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

On Sunday I met up with my friend Tilek and we decided to head over to Trinity College and take a look around. It turned out that you can do the campus tour and see the book for just one euro more. The tour, given by a recent grad, was very entertaining. Let me pose the same question he gave us – what word would you use to describe the color of the clock in the photo below?

[simage=1349,max,n,center,]

Our tour guide had posed the question to tourists from all over the world, and no matter what language they spoke, the answer was basically equivalent to “sky blue.” Except in Dublin, where residents are more likely to see the clocks than the blue sky, and therefor it is known as “Trinity blue.”

The Book of Kells really is an amazing piece of artwork, but so is the Long Room of the Old Library at Trinity College. With it’s carved woodwork and high barrel-vaulted ceiling it’s like a cathedral of the written word.

Afterward we decided to head up north on the DART to Howth, a hilly peninsula on the end of Dublin Bay, and do a bit of hiking along the cliffs. The weather went from cold and gray to sun and bitter cold, but the view of the sea and the coast made it all worth it.

[simage=1359,max,n,center,]

[simage=1360,max,n,center,]

I neglected to bring my polarizer which would have helped with the glare coming off the sea from the evening sun. You can see some photos that did come out in the gallery below.

I got some much better photos the next night, walking along the Grand Canal back to my hotel. The canal was once a major freight and passenger route, but now it’s mostly used as a linear park wrapping around the older parts of the city. The locks are maintained and canal boats still ply the waterway for dinner cruises.

[simage=1328,max,n,center,]

[simage=1329,max,n,center,]

With well-lit streets on either side and calm, flat water it’s a great place to take photos as the light fades into dusk.

[simage=1334,max,n,center,]

[simage=1335,max,n,center,]

I had a lot of fun taking long exposures of the canal boats, headlights streaking by, and even joggers crossing in front of me. I didn’t get back until quite late.

[simage=1338,max,n,center,]

[simage=1341,max,n,center,]

The canal itself isn’t very large – the common joke is that it’s not particularly grand – and it actually reminded me a bit of the Ohio and Erie Canal near Cleveland, since both are maintained now as urban (or suburban) parks.

The rest of the photos can be found here:
