Visiting Grandparents in D.C.

By: Ann

This weekend we flew off to D.C. to visit with my parents.  We were a little nervous about the flight there, due to Athena catching a cold and having a fever a week before leaving.  But Athena did wonderfully, despite her being more mobile this time around.  We even had some new-ish toys and downloaded a couple of episodes of Sesame Street on my phone if we really got desperate.  I did have to walk her around on both flights, but we never ended up using Sesame Street.

Although we have been doing webcam (roughly) every week, this is the first time that my step-dad got to meet Athena in person.  We arrived on Thursday night.  By the next morning, Athena quickly took to her grandparents and  had free reign of all of the crawling space in the condo.

We spent most of the day relaxing at home on Friday.  After Athena’s mini-epic nap, we decided to go to Great Falls National Park after eating out at a restaurant in the mall.  Here we got to enjoy pretty waterfalls.

The next day was filled with even more relaxing and yummy Fourth of July foods.  Athena took another epic nap, which kind of dampened our plans of visiting one of the art museums in D.C.,  but that’s okay.  Visiting is good enough for me.  After our traditional Independence Day dinner, we decided to go to Dairy Queen for some dessert.  Athena had about 2 ounces of vanilla ice cream.  We thought that the sweet taste of the ice cream might not be worth all of the cold, but she really enjoyed the ice cream.

On Sunday, we spent most of the day a home and ended our day with a long flight back to California.  That day we decided to take some family pictures, especially the 3 generation picture of the Heron girls.

It was a wonderful visit.  We really wish that Athena could be closer to both sets of grandparents, but I guess this gives her an opportunity to appreciate them all the more, kind of like I did as a child with my grandparents living in Jamaica.
